The Toxicity of Used Coffee Grounds to the Larvae of Ochlerotatus (Finlaya) notoscriptus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae)

چکیده
The exotic Ochlerotatus notoscriptus is the most widespread container-breeding mosquito species in anthropic habitats in northern in New Zealand, and also a potential disease vector. We tested the toxicity of used coffee grounds, a recently proposed larvicide, to the species’ larvae, which is known to be tolerant to a wide range of water quality levels. High concentrations of used coffee grounds induced very large larval mortality within a few days. However, large mortality occurred in the controls after two weeks, and there was an apparent boost to larval survivorship in treatments with low to medium concentrations of coffee grounds. Although the results suggest that used coffee grounds could constitute a cost-free and environmentally sound alternative to less desirable insecticides, we believe that extensive field trials are necessary before their use as a larval control method is advocated.

The species composition of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Mahshahr district, Khuzestan province, southwest of Iran
There is very little information about the mosquito fauna of Mahshahr district. The present study gives an overview of data on the species composition and distribution of mosquitoes in the Mahshahr district, Khuzestan province, southwest of Iran. In order to study the mosquito fauna, the samples were collected from May to November 2012 using dipping and total catch methods from seven villages (...

Although New Zealand has a species-poor mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) fauna with only 12 endemic and four exotic species (Derraik 2004), little information is available on their bionomics, particularly for indigenous species. One poorly known species is the endemic Culex (Culex) asteliae Belkin. Adults of this species have recently been collected in nature for the first time, and all specimens ...
متن کاملEvaluation of two dipping methods for sampling immature Culex and Ochlerotatus mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) from artificial containers
Monitoring changes in populations of immature (larvae and pupae) mosquitoes are fundamental to determining mosquito-borne disease risk. Dipping is the most common method used to sample immature mosquitoes, but it can be biased towards particular species and instars. We aimed to assess the generality of the findings of Mori (1989), who showed that stirring the water of artificial containers gave...

Background & Objectives: Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are medically considered as one of the most important species of insects in terms of disease transmission to human beings; hence, they can be vectors of remarkable diseases such as malaria, West Nile, dengue fever, yellow fever, and filariasis. This study aimed to determine the species diversity and larval habitat characteristics of mosqu...
متن کاملContainer aperture size and nutrient preferences of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Auckland region, New Zealand.
Ovitraps are a widely used tool for mosquito vector surveillance and population monitoring. In the Auckland region, New Zealand, the oviposition preferences of mosquitoes were assessed in artificial breeding containers in relation to container aperture size and water nutrient levels. Only three mosquito species were recorded: the endemic Culex pervigilans and the exotic Culex quinquefasciatus a...
